The Atherton Trust

The late Mr Samuel Atherton, many years ago, lived at Nobold House, Shrewsbury. He was a colliery proprietor who died in 1933. His estate was left in trust for his family until his last surviving daughter died in 1981.  It was at this time that The Atherton Trust was created.  Mr. Atherton had directed in his will that the Trust should operate for the benefit of the residents in the parishes of Pontesbury and Hanwood and the village areas of Annscroft and Hook-a-Gate. These areas are now known by different names but, to all intents and purposes, the area covered remains the same.

The Atherton Trust holds funds to provide financial support to those in need in the Pontesbury, Hanwood, Longden and inclusive parishes and is inviting grant requests. Grants are made to individuals and families who encounter financial difficulties which conventional support organisations do not cover eg Social Services etc.

In the first instance please contact our Secretary Paul Adams who will help clarify what we are able to support, and will assign one of our Trustees to help you formulate your request and to help fill in the necessary paperwork.

Grants are usually paid directly to the supplier of the goods or services requested.  The Trust also supports community groups, social clubs, sporting clubs, charities, village halls…etc who need specific funding to start up a new activity, purchase/replace equipment or to meet unexpected expenditure ..eg building repairs.

The Trust intends to be open minded about the types of activity it will support as long as the activity responds to community need within its designated area.  The Trust is keen to hear from a wide range of organisations, and now invites applications, which should be addressed in the first instance to Paul Adams our Secretary who will assign a relevant Trustee to help formulate and document the application.

All applications are treated in the strictest confidence and in accordance with the privacy regulations defined in the General Data Protection Act.  Paul can be contacted by email to pauladams797@btinternet.com
